When manufacturing decorative ribbed plastic tiles, choosing the right surface finish is critical. Your selection directly impacts appearance, unit cost, wear resistance, production yield and environmental compliance. For 3”×6”, 8mm thick ABS tiles with parallel ribs, especially for medium-to-large batch orders up to 73,000 pieces, there are 5 practical finishing solutions to consider.

1. Integrated Color Masterbatch Injection

This process mixes color masterbatch with raw ABS pellets before molding. With textured mold etching, the part comes out from the mold with consistent gold color in one step, no secondary coating required.

Best for: Cost-sensitive mass production. If you need scratch-resistant parts without peeling risk, or your product requires secondary cutting or drilling, this option works perfectly. The pigment runs through the entire plastic substrate, so scratches won’t expose a white base material.

Limitations: It cannot deliver strong metallic shimmer. You will get matte gold rather than the sparkling metal look.

2. Post Spray Painting

Produce natural ABS blanks first, then apply metallic gold paint and curing after injection. This is a common way to replicate fine sand metallic gold samples.

Best for: Projects where visual appearance is the top priority. It supports flexible color tuning to match your reference sample. It fits orders with medium budget and indoor usage.

Limitations: The gold color is only a thin surface coating. Heavy friction or scratches will reveal the white ABS substrate. It brings VOC concerns, longer lead time and higher rejection rate from dust, flow marks or peeling. Not recommended for long-term outdoor use.

3. Vacuum Metallizing (VM)

After molding natural ABS parts, we deposit a thin metal film under vacuum, then add a transparent protective topcoat to achieve metallic gold texture.

Best for: Indoor decorative applications. It provides metallic appearance with better wear resistance than regular spray paint and lower VOC emissions. Suitable for large-volume orders when you want metal look without liquid painting.

Limitations: The coating may turn uneven inside deep rib grooves, so custom fixture design is required. The thin metallic layer still can be scratched under heavy abrasion.

4. IMD / In-Mold Decoration

Place pre-printed metallic decorative film inside the mold cavity before injection. When ABS melts and fills the mold, the film fuses permanently onto the plastic part in one molding cycle.

Best for: Products demanding premium metallic finish and excellent scratch resistance. It is economical if you have repeat orders after this batch. No painting needed, which meets strict environmental requirements.

Limitations: High upfront cost for mold modification and custom foil tooling. For your multi-rib tile structure, pre-production testing is mandatory to avoid film wrinkling over the rib grooves. It is not cost-effective for one-time single orders.

5. ABS Electroplating

Electroplate real metal layers onto ABS plastic to create genuine metallic gold surface.

Best for: High-end small decorative components that require top-class real-metal texture and corrosion resistance, with sufficient project budget.

Limitations: It is the most expensive option, with strict wastewater and environmental regulations. For your large ribbed tile, the plating layer tends to be uneven inside the parallel grooves, leading to high defect rates. Not recommended for this product.

Quick Selection Guide

  • Control cost & anti-peeling → Integrated masterbatch injection

  • Match sample metallic gold look → Post spray painting

  • Indoor metal look, lower VOC → Vacuum metallizing

  • High scratch resistance + repeat orders → IMD

  • Luxury small parts, unlimited budget → Electroplating

Final Thought

There is no universal “best” finish. Your decision should balance target visual effect, budget, usage environment and total order quantity. We can produce prototype samples for any of these processes to verify appearance and performance before full mass production.
