PA12 (Polyamide 12 / Nylon 12) is widely selected for outdoor equipment because of its low moisture absorption, excellent low-temperature toughness and chemical resistance. When formulated with UV stabilizers, UV-resistant PA12 becomes an ideal material for vehicle tracking housings, outdoor sensor enclosures and exposed cargo safety components.

UV additives and PA12 base resin together bring unique challenges for mold design and molding. Improper tooling will cause yellowing, gas burns, silver streaks, warpage and dimensional drift.

1. Material characteristics of UV-stabilized PA12

  • Low water absorption compared with PA6 / PA66

  • Semi-crystalline; final performance highly depends on crystallization level

  • UV stabilizers are heat-sensitive. Excessive shear or overheating will degrade UV additives and shorten outdoor service life.

  • During melting, PA12 releases ammonia gas. Combined with decomposed UV additives, more corrosive gas is generated during mass production.

Important reminder: Not all PA12 grades have built-in UV protection. Adding UV masterbatch at the molding machine is less reliable than resin compounded UV stabilizer for long-term outdoor exposure.

2. Shrinkage for mold cavity calculation

  • Unfilled UV-stabilized PA12: 1.2% ~1.6%

  • Glass-filled UV PA12 (GF10 / GF20): 0.5% ~0.8% Thicker wall sections show higher shrinkage. Mold temperature, packing pressure and holding time affect final shrinkage. For outdoor precision parts, post-shrinkage must be considered in DFM.

3. Mold steel recommendation

  • Small batch / prototype mold: P20, 718H

  • Mass production, outdoor UV PA12: S136 / STAVAX stainless steel Ammonia from PA12 plus decomposed UV additives creates corrosive vapor. Ordinary mold steel will suffer rust, pitting and surface degradation over long runs. Stainless steel protects cavity surface and keeps texture consistent for weathering test samples.

4. Mold temperature setting

Recommended mold temperature: 70℃ ~ 90℃ Higher mold temperature improves crystallinity, better dimensional stability, reduces post shrinkage and delivers more consistent weathering performance. Low mold temperature causes incomplete crystallization, unstable dimensions and higher residual stress. Residual stress + UV radiation will accelerate cracking in outdoor service. Hot water mold temperature controller is preferred for uniform temperature distribution.

5. Gate design (critical for UV additives)

UV stabilizers are heat-sensitive. High shear from tiny gates will trigger thermal degradation and early yellowing.

  • Suitable gate types: edge gate, fan gate, submarine gate

  • Avoid ultra-thin gates. Gate thickness suggested at 0.7~1.2 × nominal wall thickness

  • Place gate on thick wall areas to reduce sink marks and voids

  • Minimize flow path length to reduce melt residence time

6. Venting requirement

Double attention to venting for UV PA12:

  1. PA12 decomposes and releases ammonia

  2. UV stabilizer may break down and generate gas under high temperature

  • Vent depth: 0.02 ~ 0.03 mm

  • Add extra vents at weld lines, end of fill and air trap zones

  • Keep vents clean during continuous production; clogged vents cause burn marks, silver streaks and weak weld lines

7. Draft angle, texture & surface finish

PA12 is flexible but tends to stick on cavity surface.

  • Smooth surface: minimum draft 0.5°

  • VDI textured surface: add extra 0.25°–0.5° draft angle

For outdoor UV PA12 parts:

  • Fine VDI texture can hide minor weathering marks after long sun exposure

  • Mirror polish is possible, but scratches on glossy surface become UV attack points and speed up aging

8. Cooling & warpage control

Balanced cooling channels are mandatory. Uneven cooling creates residual stress. When the part is exposed outdoors under UV, residual stress greatly increases cracking risk. Keep wall thickness uniform; avoid abrupt thickness transitions. Thick sections easily create internal voids and post-mold shrinkage.

9. Molding processing rules

  1. Drying: Dry UV PA12 at 80~90℃ for 4–6 hours. Moisture leads to bubbles and splay marks, and also accelerates degradation of UV additives.

  2. Barrel temperature: 240℃ ~ 270℃. Do not overheat. Reduce melt residence time inside barrel.

  3. Packing pressure: Use medium holding pressure. Too high packing builds heavy residual stress.

  4. Regrind control: Limit regrind percentage. Recycled PA12 loses UV protection performance.

10. Typical applications

Outdoor sensor housings, vehicle cargo tracking device enclosures, low-temperature exposed equipment shells, pneumatic outdoor fittings.
