Many overseas buyers ask the same question when they receive this two-shot handle sample: why one part of the handle is glossy and smooth, while the grip area delivers a fine matte soft-touch feeling?
Quite a few assume the matte texture comes from post-spray painting after injection molding. This is a common confusion in plastic surface finishing: in-mold texture vs post-treatment coating.
This handle adopts 2K two-shot overmolding. Both the glossy surface and matte texture are NOT made by post painting. The surface effects are pre-fabricated directly on the mold steel cavity.
For the rigid substrate section, the mold cavity is mirror-polished. Molten plastic copies the polished steel surface during cooling. The part comes out with a high-gloss finish right after ejection, with no painting required.
The anti-slip grip zone is overmolded with TPE soft material. The cavity for the second shot is pre-etched with mold grain (texture / mold texture). The fine etched pattern on steel is transferred onto TPE during injection. The soft feeling comes from the material itself. Combined with mold grain, the TPE grip is wear-resistant and anti-slip, with no risk of paint peeling off.
The 2K rotary mold completes production in one cycle. First shot forms the glossy rigid base. The mold rotates 180 degrees, the semi-finished part stays on the core without being taken out. Then the second shot injects TPE to wrap the designated area. We get a finished part with hard & soft material and two different surface finishes in one cycle. The dividing line stays neat and consistent, perfect for mass long-run orders.
Now let’s look at the alternative solution that looks similar: rigid single plastic injection + post spraying.
In this case, the whole mold cavity is polished. The as-molded part is a fully glossy rigid blank. To get matte soft touch, finished parts go to the coating workshop. A layer of soft-touch rubber paint is sprayed on the grip area.
Visually, it also looks matte and feels soft. But there is a key difference: the base plastic remains hard. The softness only exists in a thin paint layer. After repeated friction or exposure to oil, the coating may peel or wear away. This is what we call post-treatment. Besides spraying, sandblasting, laser engraving, plating, UV coating, silk printing and pad printing all belong to secondary processing after molding.
There is another frequent misunderstanding: can we make one part half glossy, half matte with single material mold? Technically yes, by polishing one section of the cavity and etching grain on the other section. No painting is needed either. But this method only creates visual difference. The whole part is rigid plastic. It cannot provide the soft, comfortable grip of TPE overmolding.
Item | 2K Two-shot Overmolding | Single Hard Plastic + Soft-Touch Spray | Single Material Partial Mold Texture |
|---|---|---|---|
Material | Rigid substrate + TPE soft rubber | Only one rigid plastic | Only one rigid plastic |
Glossy & Matte Source | Polished cavity + etched mold grain (pre-made on mold steel) | Fully polished cavity + post spraying | Cavity: half polished, half etched grain |
Soft Touch | ✅ True softness: TPE material itself | ✅ Pseudo softness: only thin paint film | ❌ No soft grip, fully hard |
Post-treatment | ❌ Not required, ready after ejection | ✅ Required, spray after molding | ❌ Not required |
Wear & Peel Risk | Very low | High (paint chipping, abrasion) | No peeling risk |
Mold Investment | High | Low | Medium |
Production Efficiency | High, one automatic cycle | Low, extra coating line | High |
Dividing Line Quality | Clean, uniform, stable | Risk of paint bleeding, uneven edge | Clean, stable |
Ideal Application | Premium power tools, automotive & appliance handles, large-volume export orders | Small trial orders, tight budget, frequent color revision | Just visual contrast, no soft anti-slip demand |
If your buyer prioritizes durable anti-slip grip and zero peeling, 2K two-shot overmolding is the reliable solution. The texture is replicated from mold steel, and softness comes from TPE, not surface coating. It costs more for tooling but cuts long-term after-sales complaints.
Soft-touch spraying is a cost-saving alternative. It can mimic a matte soft feeling at lower mold cost. However, it cannot stand heavy friction, oil or repeated hand contact. It is suitable for low-wear, non-cosmetic-critical parts.
Partial texture on single-material mold can create glossy / matte visual difference without painting. But it is important to clarify to customers: it cannot deliver soft grip. It only changes surface appearance, not material flexibility.
Practical tip for quotation: Always confirm whether the customer needs real soft grip function or only matte visual effect at the beginning of the project. This avoids huge misunderstanding on mold specification and budget.
The highlight of 2K molding is that we can integrate different materials, different tactile feelings and different appearances in one single molding cycle by applying different surface treatments on mold cavities. It is a top choice for premium handles used in home appliances, power tools and automotive components.
